Lessons I Thought Were Learned

Note to
Inner poetic self:
Have cash for gas
Station after midnight.
Not debit for the after-
Hours anti-theft
Slide-slot and
Man behind the glass.
Thank you Luddites.
Also, do not wait
Until your pack is
Gone
To buy another.
The lessons
I thought I’d learned.
And don’t put cigarettes
In ass pockets
Of jeans.

Your door
Sometimes
Locks behind
You.
Remember keys!

I dig this. I love nothing more than a poem that tells a story, however simple or minimal the narrative is. And I can definitely feel this, see it, smell it. It elicits so much imagery with so little. And, again, I dig it.

I’ve read and re-read this, and every time, “Thank you Luddites” trips me up. I’m not even saying I don’t like it – I appreciate the reference, after all – but it feels a little out of place. Don’t just get rid of it, but look at it again. Also, “Remember keys!” isn’t doing it for me. The beauty of the last stanza is that your reader figures out that you’ve locked yourself out. The last line kind of precipitates a natural “punchline,” so to speak.

Don’t take those as anything but pointers, though. I really love this piece. It’s among the best of your work thus far, in my humble opinion.

The reason for all this is not reasonable. The reason, strictly art, Still makes no sense to me.
